How to Start and Operate an Altec AT41M on a 2019 Ford F-550


This guide is written around the 2019 Ford F-550 4x4 with Altec AT41M in the Monster Equipment inventory: a refurbished regular-cab utility truck with a 46-ft insulated articulating/telescopic boom, hydraulic outriggers, and a single-man fiberglass bucket.

Who should operate it

Only a trained, employer-authorized operator. A listing walkaround is not qualification. If the work is near energized lines, the boom’s current dielectric test must be in date and the crew must be qualified for that work. Insulation and capacity are two of the first items on the inspection checklist.


Daily pre-operation inspection

Do this every shift. If something fails, tag the truck out.


Engine off

  • Manuals in the pouch
  • Pedestal bolts and welds
  • Boom rest, pins, retainers
  • Hoses, cylinders, leaks
  • Hydraulic oil with the boom stowed
  • Outriggers, shoes, pads
  • Platform, liner, gate, leveling
  • Tires, chocks, decals, e-stops
  • Fall-arrest gear and platform anchor


After start

  • Park brake holds
  • Backup alarm and outrigger motion alarm
  • Engine start/stop from the pedestal
  • E-stops kill boom functions
  • Every lower-control function
  • Outrigger interlock: boom should not leave the rest until the legs are set


That walk-around is the same logic as the dealer used bucket truck inspection checklist: chassis, boom, hydraulics, then function test.


Start the 2019 F-550

On this AT41M package:

  1. Finish the walk-around first.
  2. Seat belt on. Transmission in Park.
  3. Parking brake set. PTO enable on these Super Dutys is commonly interlocked with the park brake.
  4. Wait out the diesel glow-plug lamp, then crank.
  5. Let the engine warm before you load the hydraulic pump.


Engage the PTO

Typical sequence on F-550 Altec utility bodies:

  • Engine running
  • Park
  • Parking brake applied
  • Upfitter / PTO switch ON
  • Beacons on if you occupy a roadway


Do not drive with the PTO engaged for aerial work.


Position and stabilize

  1. Firm, level ground.
  2. Park so the work stays inside the range chart.
  3. Park brake, Park, chock the wheels.
  4. Scan lines, trees, and traffic. Barricade the swing radius and drop zone.
  5. Pads under the outrigger shoes, then lower the legs evenly.
  6. Prove the interlock before anyone enters the bucket.


The AT41M listing is built with hydraulic outriggers. Sister AT48M units on the same chassis often show four-leg setups — always follow the placard on that truck.


If a shoe sinks after you boom out, retract to center and reset. Do not “catch” a sinking truck with rotation.


Lower controls, then upper controls

Pedestal first. Platform second. Ground controls override the bucket on a working unit.

Expect some mix of e-stop, engine start/stop, upper/lower selector, rotation, lower boom, articulating arm, telescope, platform tilt, and jib/winch if equipped.

Cycle every function at low height from the ground, then from the platform.


Fly the boom

Off the rest → raise → rotate → extend last.

Retract → fold → into the rest → latch.


Stay inside the capacity chart. On this AT41M the listing is a single-man bucket; operator + tools + material in the platform all count. A jib, if installed, has its own chart. Do not side-load it.


Stand on the floor. Clip to the designated anchor before the boom leaves the rest. Keep a ground person at the pedestal.


Emergencies

  • E-stop at both stations
  • Ground controls for rescue
  • 12-volt secondary stowage / DC pump on many Altec builds — for stowing a dead main pump, not for finishing the job
  • Stay clipped in if the engine dies at height


Practice auxiliary lowering on the ground during familiarization.


Stow and shut down

  1. Retract fully.
  2. Fold into the rest and latch the travel lock.
  3. Raise outriggers. Stow pads and chocks.
  4. PTO off. Confirm the pump is quiet.
  5. Walk-around: doors, boom height, empty platform.
