First replies were not “replace the valve bank.” They were: purge, selector, trigger, tool diverter, e-stop, outrigger rollers that stuck and fooled the truck into thinking the legs were up.

What the operator usually did wrong

On an AT41M with ISO-Grip / single-handle upper controls, “the bucket is dead” is often one of these:

  1. Turret selector still on Lower. Ground station is live; platform is not. That is a safety feature, not a failure.
  2. Not holding the enable trigger / interlock on the grip. No squeeze, no pressure to the function valves, no high idle.
  3. E-stop latched at the platform or the pedestal.
  4. Tool circuit on. Rear or platform tool diverter open. Forum techs say that will kill boom oil on many Altecs.
  5. Pilot / control circuit needs a purge. Older Altec three-position Lower–Purge–Upper valves collect air. Operators slam functions, get nothing, and replace a grip that was never the problem.
  6. One function only (often rotation) while the rest work — that is a single pilot line, ball check, or cable, not “the whole upper station.”


Operator-level checks

  1. E-stops pulled out at both stations.
  2. Selector to Upper. Confirm Lower is now dead.
  3. Tool circuit off.
  4. In the platform, hold the grip enable and try one slow function. Watch whether engine idle rises.
  5. If Lower still works and Upper does not after those four, stop guessing. You are into pilot lines, solenoid enable, or a shop issue.
  6. If only one function is dead from Upper but that same function works from Lower, you are not looking at outriggers or PTO.


Do not start pulling nylon pilot lines or “bleeding like brakes” unless you have the Altec procedure and the correct control fluid. That is how air and the wrong oil get introduced.


Takeaway

The CABL replies are still the right first questions twenty years later: does the selector know you are in the bucket, and does the handle enable actually close? Most “upper controls failed” calls on an AT-series truck die right there.
